My wife had read one of the not too favourable reviews - but didn't tell me before we got there!
There was nothing to fear, the hotel is very clean and the rooms are well appointed and well maintained. The balcony of our room was small but the view of Vesuvious was fantastic, there was room for a table and chairs and the table comfortably accommodated a bottle of Proseco and two glasses!
I have to say we were very pleased with the standard of the food, we were there for two weeks and the menu didn't repeat. We stayed on a half board basis so ate there every evening. (We did find Sorrento expensive for a family of 4 - especially the soft drinks, the standard of food and the half board basis was great for us).
The pool is excellent in that it is actually big enough to swim in - which isn't always the case. There are ample sun beds and you get a choice of sunny or shady positions as the day progresses.
All of the staff that we talked to were very friendly and helpful, from waiters, reception and the chamber maids - one of whom helped us with our Italian.
The shuttle bus is fine when you get used to the times. We did walk into Sorrento on a few occasions and back. There is about 300-400 metres where there is no footpath which can be a bit intimidating - this was during the day, at night it would be more dangerous. However if you are aware of the traffic is isn't too bad.
As the hotel isn't in the centre you do get the advantage of it being quieter - there is a bus stop right outside for service buses if you wish to take a bus.
All in all if we were to return to Sorrento (this was our first visit) we wouldn't bother to look at any other hotel as we couldn't really fault this one.
